About Our Bidding System

Everyone wants to win, but at the right price. Although we suggest that you bid the maximum amount that you're willing to pay for an item, you won’t necessarily pay that amount. Of course, once the bidding for an item is closed, the highest bidder wins the item. But if necessary, we’ll adjust the top bid downwards to be no more than 10% higher than the second-highest bid. (If the winning bid is already less than 10% higher than the second-highest bid, we won’t adjust the winning bid amount at all.)

For example, if the highest bid for an item is $10,000 and the second-highest bid is only $7,500, we’ll adjust the winning bid down to $8,250 ($7,500 + 10%). If the winning bid is $8,000 and the second-highest bid is $7,500, the winning bid will not be adjusted, and will remain $8,000.

We do this because this isn’t a “live” auction, where you can see what others are bidding. Capping the highest bid at 10% above the next-highest bid protects winning bidders from their own excess, and encourages people to bid the maximum amount they feel the item is worth.

Sure, it’s a gamble. You might bid $100,000 for an item in an attempt to “pre-empt” any other bid. If the 2nd place bidder only bids $7,500, your winning bid would be adjusted down to $8,250 (saving you a whopping $91,750!). But if the 2nd place bidder has also attempted a pre-empt, and bid $75,000, your winning bid would only be adjusted down to $82,500.

Remember, this is a silent auction so be smart and bid realistically. We’ll do our best to protect your high bid, but this is a fundraiser and we are trying to raise as much money as possible.

In the unlilely event that the highest bidder is not able to pay for the item they have won, the item will be awarded to the second-highest bidder under the same terms described above (10% over the next bidder's bid).

Thanks in advance for your most generous contributions and happy bidding!
